Model 2940 (2 piece case) stainless steel Bubbleback in very nice condition. Lovely smooth bezel with very nicely re-finished antique silver dial.
The bubbleback was given it's nickname due to the protruding bubble which is actually the rear cover of the case. This was necessary as Rolex early automatic movements needed the extra room for the auto-winding mechanism.
There is a section in the book: "The Best Of Time - Rolex Wristwatches" by James M. Dowling which briefly outlines collecting vintage Rolex watches (page 350). It details the importance of having a bubbleback in any vintage Rolex collection.
Case
Stainless steel case is in excellent, original condition. The rear cover has some damage to the toothed edge and is not the original/correct back. This watch should have a reference 2940 back but this has been changed at some point (most likely during a routine service and by accident) to a 3135 reference (a rare bubbleback reference). We've seen this many times over the years and although techincally incorrect, the back fits perfectly and screws down 100% correctly as they were all interchangeable with only the model referance number being different. The serial number (between lugs at 6 o'clock is 342xxx and can easily be read with the naked eye. This is a later 2 piece case.
The original screw down winding crown is present and in excellent condition and is signed 'Oyster + Patent'.
The dimensions of the case are 32mm in diameter (not including crown 34mm inc.), 13.5mm thick and 38.5mm lug to lug.
Dial & Crystal
The lovely re-finished antique silver dial has just been done and appears as new. The Arabic numbered dial is complemented by the original 'pencil' hands which have been relumed to match the colour of the Arabic numbers. The dial is signed 'Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometre' with 'T Swiss Made T' at 6 o'clock. The low dome crystal is a brand new replacement and is in perfect condition with no scratches or chips.
Bracelet/Strap
We have fitted a brand new, very high quality Hirsch 'Genuine Croco' Louisiana Alligator strap which we feel complements the watch perfectly. A stainless steel buckle completes the watch.
We are also Hirsch stockists and can change the strap to any from their 'Classic' machine made range, or 'artisanal' range of superb hand-made straps if you desire (subject to cost). Please contact us for further details.
Movement
Very crisp and completely original automatic movement in excellent condition showing very little wear, running well and keeping excellent time.
The movement has been completely overhauled and will continue to give many years of enjoyment and reliable service. Ready to wear!
